   Résumé
   Le présentateur-vedette d'U.B.S.-TV, Howard Beale, licencié pour impopularité, dénonce ses employeurs dans une harangue enflammée et déclare son intention de se suicider devant les caméras. Sa cote remonte en flèche, et la responsable des feuilletons, Diana Christenson, après avoir évincé le directeur de l'information, Max Schumacher, confie à Beale l'animation d'une émission défouloir, exploitant les rancœurs et les frustrations des téléspectateurs. Le «prophète fou» devient bientôt la figure la plus populaire du petit écran.
   Commentaire
   Comme Max Schumacher et Howard Beale, Sidney Lumet et Paddy Chayefsky ont vécu l'«âge d'or» du direct, et assisté à la mercantilisation de la télévision américaine, à l'emprise croissante des conglomérats sur le petit écran, au développement de l'information-spectacle. Network est leur réponse à ces phénomènes: un film aux outrances calculées, mêlant brillamment polémique et nostalgie, réalisme et envolées lyriques, politique-fiction et faits divers.
